What you can expect when Light Tackle or Fly Fishing the Indian River with Capt. Mark

Most days on the water will be spent exploring the shallow grass flats, and Spoil Islands. Along with sand flats and mangrove shorelines. However if good, calm conditions arise then fishing the oceanside beaches will become more likely a possibility.

The target species in and around the Indian River Lagoon react well to both Light Tackle offerings, as well as casted flies. Being that we are a specialty Inshore Fishing guide service- all flies and leaders that we provide are hand-tied by your guide. Although Capt. Mark prefers to fish streamer patterns exclusively (when Fly Fishing the Indian River Lagoon) - in some situations a crustacean pattern will provide you the best opportunity. On the Light Tackle side, your Indian River Flats fishing guide tends to like soft plastic offerings along with jigs and a small selection of hard baits (or plugs) as well as live bait.

The warm months tend to be best for targeting large Tarpon, large Snook, Trout, Cobia, Snapper, Permit, and false albacore (bonita).

Because our preference is to sight fish, your ability to listen and present to a moving target can have a pronounced effect on your catch ratio. Keep in mind that distance casting is also a good ability to have on your side. During the Winter months (January, February & early March) the targets tend to change a bit as the water temperature falls. Common targets often then become Jacks, Mackerel, Pompano, Blue Fish, Redfish, and even the occasional large Sea Trout (30+ inches in some cases). If we are experiencing a warm Winter, then between fronts the fishing can become a lot like fishing in the warmer months with a tendency of much clearer water.

Tackle Suggestions-

Best all around fly rod and reel would be a 9ft 9wt for most days. Best fly lines tend to be weight forward floating lines that are of the Tropical variety. Best second fly line would be a clear intermediate sink tip (Ghost tip) also of the Tropical variety. For the Light Tackle side of things- a  7ft spinning outfit with a 3000-4000 size reel spooled with 10-20lb braided line is what we find ourselves using most. For plug casting gear- we use a 6ft 6in rod and medium reel spooled with 20# Braid or 12# Mono. All fly leaders can be constructed on the water by hand (by your guide). We fish a lot of fluorocarbon leader from 12#- 50# depending on what the target is at the time.
